Contexte européen

The European Commission’s Gender Equality Strategy (2020-2025) is developing a “new framework for cooperation with online platforms to tackle online violence against women, proposing a recommendation on the prevention of harmful practices, and launch an EU network on the prevention of gender-based violence and domestic violence” (European Commission, 2020).  The prevalence rates of 22% of women in the EU having experienced violence by an intimate partner, are largely reflective of those by the World Health Organization.  

The Istanbul Convention incorporates the option of applying the convention to all victims of domestic violence and, in case they choose to do so, may consider specific factors associated with domestic violence against children or the elderly, and adopt adequate measures to prevent such violence from happening (Council of Europe, 2020).
